The Syrian regime is executing a horrific military campaign in Eastern Ghouta in which tens and in some cases more than a hundred civilians are being killed daily. We need urgent action NOW to stop these attacks on civilians. The Syrian British Medical Society has prepared a draft letter to be sent to MPs. Please take a few minutes NOW to write to your MP by clicking on the link below and then copying and pasting the following letter into the relevant area. Then kindly share with all your contacts on social media.
Dear [your MP],
As one of your Constituents, I am writing to draw your attention to the catastrophic situation affecting civilians in Eastern Ghouta, on the outskirts of the Syrian capital Damascus.
The region of Eastern Ghouta, home to over 500,000 civilians, has been under a very tight siege for over four years, and has been suffering daily bombardment for several months. However, in the past 24 hours, there has been a major escalation in the indiscriminate bombardment of civilian areas and healthcare facilities in Eastern Ghouta.
Under the guise of targeting extremist armed groups, the Syrian and the Russian Air Forces have massively escalated their brutal and vicious bombardment of Eastern Ghouta.
Over 72 airstrikes have pounded the towns of Eastern Ghouta in the past 24 hours alone, resulting the death of over 100 civilians, and to the wounding of over 500 more. There are unknown numbers of casualties still trapped under the rubble of demolished buildings. Thousands of civilians, mostly women and children, have sought shelter in poorly equipped underground shelters, where there is hardly any amenities for hygiene and sanitation, and little or no clean water or food stocks. The intensity of the bombardment means that civilians are unable to venture out of shelters to get food, and the long-standing siege means that food supplies in the whole area are in extreme shortage, anyway.
Five hospitals and several other medical points have been destroyed or rendered out of service as a result of deliberate and targeted bombardment in the past 24 hours, depriving the civilian population of the even most basic emergency health care. Several medical personnel and patients have been killed or injured in the indiscriminate shelling. The unprecedented assault shows no sign of abating.
As one of your Constituents, I urge you to seek clarification from Her Majesty’s Government about what measures the Government is planning, to exert pressure on the Syrian and Russian Governments to force the cessation of indiscriminate bombardment of civilians, and to provide the necessary protection of those civilians.
I also urge you to demand that Her Majesty’s Government uses all of its influence to ensure the delivery of vital food and medical supplies to the besieged areas, and to arrange the evacuation of over 600 seriously injured civilians still entrapped within Eastern Ghouta.
The international community must act quickly to avert a catastrophe that the seven-year-long Syrian crisis has not seen anything like before. The British Government must assume the leadership of such efforts. We cannot stand watching impotently as innocent civilians are being slaughtered.
